Step 6a (Do You Want to Promote Your Website)
If your website is just for use by yourself and friends there is no need to promote the website so strangers will find it when surfing the web. For personal websites you can simply email the website address to your friends. For such cases you may be able to use the personal web space provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Go to their web site to see if they offer free website hosting for your personal web pages. CAUTION - DON'T put personal information in a web site that you don't want everyone to have (phone numbers, social security number, private information, etc).
Step 6b (How to Promote Your Website)
Search engine companies are secretive about how they rank websites for the display order of search results. Good Title and Description words should be included for each web page (see FAQS). Some search engines use this information and some search the words in your web pages to select words to be entered in their database. You can register your website with the search engines. Some ignore this and constantly search the web for new websites but it is good idea to register to be sure your website is considered. Search engines don't include all websites (even if registered) and it may take weeks/months for your website to be included.
One thing some search engines look for is how many other websites have links to your website. Therefore, it may help to include links to other websites that will also include a link to your website.
Being included in the first few listings for a search is becoming increasingly difficult. If you want to significantly improve your search engine rating you will need to sign up for a PPC (Pay Per Click) program, an Ezine (Electronic Magizne) program, and/or purchase the services of a website promotion company (see FAQS). Be careful to chose one that really provides results and doesn't just take your money. Also, be careful about using bulk email as you may be labeled a SPAMER and your website will be disabled (and you may face legal action).
