HOW TO GET A WEBSITE (DOMAIN) NAME
Every website has a unique name (cnn.com, irs.gov, havard.edu, charter.net, etc.) Before you can create a website you must decide on a name for the website that nobody else has used/reserved. You also have to decide on an extension (.com, .net, etc.). The most common extension is ".com". Some extensions are intended for specific types of organizations. For example; ".edu" for schools/universities and ".gov" for government departments. The unique name is actually the combination of the basic name and the extension and is called a URL (uniform resource locater). Therefore, joeblow.com and joeblow.net could be owned by different individuals/companies. Sometimes a person/company will register/purchase a basic name and multiple extensions to prevent someone else from using them. I recommend that you register the .com, .net, and .org extensions for your domain name. If they are not all available be sure the websites using the other extensions are not something objectionable as someone might go to them when they want your website.
The next step provides information about getting your desired website name registered.
