About Blogs
The acronym "blog" is derived from the term "weblog" (web log). The first blogs were created in the 1990's. Blog websites were originally used primarily by people that wanted to record their activities and thoughts in diary format - hence the term "weblog". There are now millions of blogs and they are now used for a wide variety of reasons. They are still used by people as online diaries but most are now used to promote a cause, comment on the news, express political views, etc. In the early days of blogs they were mostly non-commercial but now many blogs promote products. When you use a search engine like Google to find information the results generally do not include information from blogs. If you want to search only blogs for information you need to use an online blog search service or a special software program. These two methods are explained in the following paragraphs.
Online Blog Search Services
Online blog search services allow you to enter search information that is used to search only in blogs. Just like for a regular web search engine, you can browse the contents of the listed blogs. Blogs frequently add new postings (articles). If you find a blog and would like to know when the blog adds a new posting you can subscribe to that blog. Subscribing to a blog requires that you sign up with an online blog search service. This allows the blog search service to keep track of your blog subscriptions. Then all you have to do is periodically log in to the blog search service to view your list of subscribed-to blogs. Any new postings by the blogs will be identified. You can then just click on a blog and view the new posting(s). This is much easier and faster then having to individually go to the website of each blog to find out if there are any new postings. Online blog search services make their money by including ads for products.
